Interview with Khristian Howell
Which colour best describes your personality and why?
Tough question. White I suppose. I am very clear on what I want and like, however I am always an open canvas for new ideas and adventures.
How did your journey as a designer begin?
I started out as an in-house colourist and textile designer at Nordstrom Product Group. I began in kidswear and found it such a thrill to see my work moving around on little people all over the country. After five years of creative and business growth with Nordstrom, I decided I wanted to explore other avenues outside of kids and started working on my own.
What's your biggest source of visual inspiration?
Travel, fashion, intriguing restaurants.
Where does your confidence and positive energy come from?
I see now that I am very fortunate to have grown up in a household where I was never told no. By this I mean anything I was interested in, my parents always said let’s go for it. I had full support in anything I wanted to try whether the interest lasted 5 min or 5 years. This gave me the freedom to explore without fear of rejection or failure. I understand now in hindsight that this is one of the biggest gifts of my upbringing.
"WE ARE CONFIDENT, CREATIVE, CHARMING,
AND MAYBE A BIT OF A BALLBUSTER.
LET'S SQUEEZE EVERY BIT OF WINE (PREFERABLY CHAMPAGNE) OUT OF THIS LIFE.
WE ARE LEADERS, TREND SETTERS, AND SPIRITUAL GUIDES FOR THE LOVED ONES IN OUR LIVES.
ALWAYS PUT TOGETHER.
WE MAKE IT ALL LOOK EASY BECAUSE FOR US, IT IS.
WE ARE FEARLESSLY CHIC.
AND SO ARE YOU."
We love the mantra on your website. What inspired you to write it, and how does it influence the way you work?
This mantra is the core of what I have been trying to express as a designer from the very beginning. I finally found a way to package it and express it clearly and concisely!
What advice would you give to someone who wants to make a living from their creativity, but is too afraid to take the plunge?
Fear and Faith cannot coexist. This is something I come back to often. If you have faith that you deserve to live your happiest life, then fear is something you must tame into submission.
